Home Learning for Families
As we navigate these strange pandemic times, we realize that there are periods of time that students will not be in attendance at school. Your child's teacher is working hard to ensure continuity of learning for those times when students are home sick or isolating, but they feel well enough to do some work. Caregivers can contact the office to request work from their child's teacher in these instances.
In the meantime, here are some resources and that may assist you in providing learning opportunities for your child while at home. We will be adding more as we go along, so please check back if you are looking for something for a certain grade level or topic.
Daily Schedule/Routine
It is a good idea to set a routine when learning from home. Here is an example of a schedule for the day that could be followed for a 9am - 3pm day of home learning:
9 am | Reading Choose reading materials that are at or slightly above your child's reading level; every student has access to our school library and can sign books out for home reading |
9:30 am | Math Practice basic operations: adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, play a card or board game |
10:15 am | Break/Snack |
10:30 am | Writing Personal journal writing, write a story, play or poem, or write about what they are reading |
11:00 am | Daily Physical Activity Take a walk, go for a jog or hike, play active video game, do and exercise/yoga video, etc. |
11:45 am | Break/Lunch |
12:30 pm | Social Studies Create a map (of home, school, neighbourhood, city, for example), learn about Canada, learn about another country or culture, etc. |
1:00 pm | Fine Arts Draw, craft, sing or play music, watch a musical or play online, rock painting, create greeting cards for friends and relatives, etc. |
1:45 pm | Break/Snack |
2:00 pm | Science Make observations about animals and/or nature, do an experiment, research a topic about the natural world, etc. |
2:30 pm | Applied Skills Coding, computer skills, creating/building (Lego, blocks, small construction projects, for example.) cooking, etc. |
Many of these subject areas can be practiced at students' own level by engaging in
regular household and family activities!
